Final BeCA Public Meeting and AGM for 2021

There was a good crowd in attendance at the final BeCA Public Meeting/AGM. Despite apologies from Federal MP Andrew Wallace (Queensland’s Covid19 restrictions) and last-minute apologies from local MP Jason Hunt (attending the new Queensland Governor Swearing in) and Senior Constable Peter (work roster) the meeting proved informative and entertaining.
The meeting began with AGM procedures and reports from the Treasurer and the outgoing BeCA President on the year’s activities.

Guests Cr Rick Baberowski and former State MP Member Mark McArdle were welcomed to the meeting.
Following a recent family medical incident, the BeCA President for the last 10 years Les Thomas was not standing for the 2022 BeCA Management Committee along with the hard-working Secretary Deb O’Reilly.
The 2022 Management Committee will ensure all positions are filled at an upcoming Management Committee meeting.
Cr Baberowski summed up how important BeCA had been in serving the Community over its recent history, especially with issues relating to local bus services, the Youth Forums, Caloundra Aerodrome Forums and the establishment of the Bellvista Meeting Place. Along with a myriad of other local issues, BeCA’s contribution to the community over the previous 13 years or so has been significant. He urged residents to become involved to ensure the good work continued.
Cr Baberowski said there was an 89% level of support in submissions received by Council on the proposal for the construction of a new half court basketball court at Canavan Gracie Recreational Park. The project will go ahead with designs now being drawn up.
Stockland will further duplicate Bellvista Blvd down to Emerald Drive as traffic trigger points have now been reached. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2022. Some further fine-tuning investigation is required on the section of Bellvista Blvd between Dumbarton and Stornaway.
Council will extend the grassy separation strip between the veloway and the footpath along Bellvista Blvd following the successful trial at the northern end of the paths.
Council has completed its’ proposals for the SC Mass Transport System and has forwarded all proposals to the State Government for further consideration. The proposals include all suggestions and are based around the construction of a heavy rail link between Beerwah and Maroochydore. Final decisions are between 2 and 4 years away.
In replying to questions from the floor it was noted that the 9pm shut off for lights at the tennis court had been a winner in the eyes of locals. A question was raised regarding safe pedestrian crossing points for along Bellvista Blvd during peak school drop off and pick up times. Suggestions should be accompanied by a photo or sketch and can be forwarded to Cr Baberowski’s office via BeCA. There has been no alteration to the proposed new development near the Bellvista Blvd/Caloundra Rd roundabout.
Former State MP Member Mark McArdle was presented with his BeCA Life Membership plaque. He sees such awards from local community groups as highly significant and thanked BeCA for the honor.
He considered one of his most memorable times whilst being the local MP was when a former school student whom he had presented an iPad some 10 years earlier approached him to say thanks. It was these seemingly smaller incidents are the important ones which stay most etched in his memory.
Since retiring Mark has maintained an involvement with the LNP by assisting with reviews on recent matters relating to the party. He is also involved with a local fund-raising group raising funds for the disadvantaged.
He is a committee member on a group endeavouring to create a single Water Authority body to monitor all aspects of the Pumicestone Passage. Currently numerous groups are responsible for different aspects of the protection of this waterway. To streamline this bureaucracy from many smaller and diverse groups to one which acts under the one umbrella of the “The Pumicestone Water Authority” seems the logical outcome.
Other issues Mark referred to were to improve health facilities for a wider age group, especially children and young families. He has concerns over the current water supply situation for the South East and fears another year of below average rainfall could plunge the area into severe water restrictions. The looming prospect of the development of Beerwah East or Halls Creek will create more issues for a developing Sunshine Coast area.
The question of motorized bikes arose from the floor during General Business. Some youths are riding at excessive speed around park areas and local footpaths and are raising the concerns of locals. The noise of these vehicles can be an issue as well. Residents are advised to use Police Link either online or by lodging a complaint by phone on 131444.
