BeCA receives regular updates from Translink here on the Sunshine Coast regarding the new dedicated bus service to cover Bellvista and Bells Reach. The new service will see the six previously closed bus stops re opened and the introduction of a daily service to Caloundra 4 times per day, 7 days per week. We can report the introduction of the new dedicated service is progressing but at an awfully slow rate.
The most recent calculation has the new service up and running late in February 2020 rather than January as originally predicted.
Translink explain to us that they have rigorous processes to observe along with a specific timeline. It is our understanding that the proposal for the new route, times, dates, drivers, vehicles etc has been completed by Translink and passed on to the ‘Contractor”. Under Translink’s guidelines, the Contractor now has one month to review the proposal prior to getting back to Translink with any possible required modifications.
If all is acceptable to the Contractor and no further modifications are required Translink, would expect to begin consultation with the community later in January with the new service to begin late February.
BeCA has explained to Translink of the frustration being experienced by elderly residents who continue to struggle over a kilometre to and from the current nearest bus stop, often with a load of shopping in tow during the summer heat. There is also the crossing of Bellvista Blvd that these elderly residents need to negotiate on the return trip from Caloundra.
BeCA also would love to know how a service can be shut down in a few months but then take 7 or 8 months to be reinstated! There seems little or no logic. However many of us have worked for Government Departments during our working lives and have come to know how the slow wheels of government department decision making can turn.
But from the ‘glass half full’ perspective, the new dedicated bus service available to all Bellvista and Bells Reach residents should be wonderful when it is fully operational …. when it eventually comes into being!
