From Sunday 1st July retailers in Qld will no longer be using single use plastic bags to pack your purchases. This is a Qld State Government initiative that all retailers must abide by.
If you are going to our local IGA or any of our other retailers, please remember to start taking your own reusable bags or you can purchase a variety of different sized reusable bags for a minimal cost. Once you have enough bags to suit your needs, leave them somewhere handy at home or in your car and remember to take them with you each time you shop.
IGA have Reusable Bags for 15 cents, Green Bags for $1 and Hessian Bags for $2.50 in two different sizes. So, if you don’t already have some bags on hand grab a couple to bring your purchases home in. These bags are usually stronger than the single use plastic ones and general hold more of your shopping in the one bag. If you are only grabbing one or two things perhaps you won’t need to use a bag at all.
In Bellvista & Bells Reach for many years we’ve had a very dedicated group of residents who volunteer their time to pick up litter from around our roadways, parks and lakes. We are very grateful to these wonderful people who take the time to clean up litter, particularly plastic bags that can cause significant injury and illness to birdlife and other small native animals. So, the more we as a community can reduce the amount of plastic that gets into landfill and waterways the better.
