BeCA President Les Thomas had an informal meeting today with Mr Keith Eglen, an owner of Queensland Aviation Services, a sub lease holder and the main operator of fixed wing aircraft at Caloundra Airport. Queensland Aviation Services trains pilots with its fixed wing aircraft.
The purpose of the meeting was to allow an exchange of information and concerns regarding aircraft behaviour over our housing estate.
Mr Eglen assured Bellvista residents of his company’s express desire to live in harmony with surrounding residential communities and that his company would do all in its power to ensure minimal disturbance to residents from aircraft under its control. He had instructed his pilots to keep away where possible from all residential areas. He had strict guidelines for his aircraft when taking off and landing especially when using the south-east/north-west runway (12/30) where the flight path was directly over Bellvista homes.
Mr Eglen offered to investigate any Bellvista resident’s concerns from inappropriate behaviour of fixed wing aircraft.
Mr Thomas said the main concern from Bellvista residents was the repetitive circuits of helicopters from the helicopter training school (Chopperline) and not necessarily the behaviour of fixed wing aircraft.
It should be possible for helicopters to do their repetitive training circuits and not over fly people’s homes. Chopperline could either plan their circuits from Caloundra Airport so as not to fly over Bellvista homes, or the government or council could provide a satellite field away from built up areas for them to utilize. So if there were two helipads along with a 200 metre strip of runway in an area well away from residential homes, helicopter training flights could be conducted in an environment which does not impact on residential areas.
Fuel and access to emergency services would need to be provided.
The informal meeting was beneficial to both parties and Mr Thomas and Mr Eglen agreed to remain in contact.
If a Bellvista resident has a concern regarding the behaviour of a ‘fixed wing aircraft’ over the estate could you please email BeCA (HERE) and the email will then be passed onto Mr Eglen.
