From time to time, BeCA receives emails outlining issues residents are facing. This week BeCA has received two such emails with one of the writers concerned about dogs barking and a second email on dogs off leash.
The vast majority of dog owners are truly responsible and ensure their dog is well behaved and is being controlled within Council By Laws. When taking their dog for the daily walk, responsible owners ensure their dog is on a leash.
In the first email a resident has reported that the dog next door barks almost non-stop later in the afternoon when its owners arrive home. The resident has requested BeCA put something in its newsletter to raise the issue and hopefully have the barking dog stopped. If only the newsletter was that powerful that many barking dogs could be stopped by a newsletter article. The responsibility to keep a dog from barking lies with the dog’s owner. Dogs which are well trained and receive regular daily exercise are less likely to be bored and bark continually.
BeCA has suggested the resident raise the issue with the dog owner and see if a resolution can be reached.
The second email was from a dog owner who regularly walked his dog on a leash as required by Sunshine Coast Council while so many other owners just carry the leash with them but allow their dogs to roam free. Council By-Laws insist that all dogs in public places be on a leash. A worrying factor was that it is reported that some dog owners are using the new “Frog Park” as an off leash area for their dogs. Frog Park was specifically created as a park for younger children and their families to enjoy the outdoors, and definitely not as an off leash area for dogs.
The Sunshine Coast website has specific details on who is responsible for what when it comes to dogs, In ALL cases the responsibility for a dog’s behaviour is on the dog owner. Even if your dog has been to “Doggie School”, this does not guarantee your dog will be quiet when locked in the backyard while you are away nor that it won’t scare younger children or even older adults if allowed to run free in a children’s park.
BeCA is aware that some residents refuse to go bike riding for fear of being harassed by any off leash dog!
Just walk around our delightful estates and count the number of owners who have a dog leash in hand but the dog is running free. BeCA will raise the issue of Dogs Off Leash with Council By Laws and ask that our estate be more regularly patrolled by By Laws Officers.
Responsible Dog Owners use doggie bags to clean up after their pets and ensure the used doggie bag then finds its way into a rubbish bin and not left on a garden seat somewhere for someone else to deal with!
