There were three of the four candidates for the upcoming Council Elections for Division 1 at BeCA’s first Public Meeting for 2016, the current Councillor Rick Baberowski, and candidates Dave Ritson and Rod Jones (photo above).
Cr Baberowski gave his report to the Meeting which has been included in the post above.
In many ways both Dave Ritson and Rod Jones were similar in their presentations.
Both indicated they had a strong desire to serve the residents of Division 1 and had great passion for the Sunshine Coast way of life.
Both saw the lack of Council action over the new Caloundra Rd/Bruce Highway interchange and the upgrade of the Bruce Highway as their main reasons for standing. They were disappointed at the lack of Public Consultation on the project and that the views of locals had largely been ignored.
It is the aim of the Federal Government to remove as much ‘local traffic’ from the Bruce Highway upgrade as possible and return the road to 110kph. This is Federal Government policy for all of Highway 1. The candidates believe that Council should have fought harder over this Federal Government issue.
Mr Jones lives in Golden Beach and has a business near the former Ettamogah Hotel. Mr Ritson is a resident of Beerwah and has alternative plans for the Caloundra Rd/Bruce Highway interchange. Mr Ritson believes his alternative plans for the Caloundra Rd/Bruce Hwy interchange will more closely reflect the final design plans.
Rod Jones is also a strong supporter of more employment for youth in our area.
There was not a great deal of time available so both candidates were only able to make brief presentations. Neither candidate focused on issues relating to Bellvista and Bells Reach but were more concerned with the overall lack of consultation with locals.
Both remained after the meeting and fielded questions and viewpoints from residents in attendance at the meeting.
